Frequently-Asked Questions

We use UPS and Royal Mail for our deliveries.

UPS is a tracked next-day service and requires a signature on delivery. If you're not in, they will re-attempt delivery twice, or leave it at a nearby Access Point and put a card through your door. You can also specify a safe place to leave it (eg your next-door neighbour - in that case, please tell us in your order comments and preferably leave a note for the delivery driver. He will need some form of paperwork to allow him to leave the parcel without a signature.

You can track the progress of your order any time by logging into your account on this website. The email we send you telling you that we have despatched your parcel will give you the tracking code - please copy and paste this into Google to bring up the tracking page as the first search result.

If you have any problems with your delivery, please contact us and we will speak to UPS on your behalf and try to sort things out.

Returns and Refunds

We never want you to be unhappy with your purchase for any reason. If in doubt, call us and we will refund you in full, whatever the situation

If you are not happy with your tea, please contact us and we will give you a refund or a credit note, as appropriate to the situation.

On the back of the pack of tea is a batch code and best-before date. It would greatly help us in working out what has gone wrong if you could check these and let us know when you contact us.

We cannot accept returns of tea if the packet has been opened, because of food hygiene requirements. But don't worry, we will sort something out for you.

Sometimes it is helpful for us to see the item to find out what the problem is. In this case, if it is our fault, we will arrange for UPS to collect the item, at our expense.

What is Portsmouth Tea?

Portsmouth Tea is a rich, strong, full-flavoured tea that is specially blended for Portsmouth's hard, chalky water.

The same goes for all our Local Tea Blends. They are strong, satisfying teas that are the best they possibly can be for the water where you live. They all celebrate the local area with beautiful images on the packs and make excellent presents.

Portsmouth Tea - just like all the other Local Tea Blends - is priced competitively so that you can afford to drink it all day, every day.

When will my tea arrive?

We send tea out with UPS's next-day tracked courier service. We aim to despatch orders received by 12 noon the same day but if we are very busy this might not be possible. At worst, allow three days from order to delivery. If your order is urgent, please let us know.

How do you make a Local Tea Blend?

We begin with a good understanding of the water type in the area (hardness / acidity / mineral content), taking note of how the local water company distribute the water (the water in your tap might not match the geology of where you live). This is enough for us to make a first attempt at the blend. We then visit the place and obtain several gallons of the water.

We can then adjust the blend until we think it is about right. Finally, we visit the area again with the finished product, usually taking the opportunity to offer it to some of the local shops, and taste it over and over again until we are confident that no further changes are needed.

What's the point of the Royal Navy Teas?

We are based in Portsmouth, the home of the Royal Navy, and our Founder is a former Naval Officer. It is therefore fitting that we celebrate the ships that protect our nation's safety and prosperity.

The Royal Navy teas are suited to the very soft water that is produced by the machinery fitted on board.

Are my credit card details safe?

Yes. We do not handle card details on this site, despite appearances, and we cannot see them. They are held securely by Braintree, a card processing company owned by PayPal. When you look at your account area and update your cards, you are the only one who can see the numbers. We never see them and never can. Braintree are a validated Level 1 PCI DSS Compliant Service Provider. Find out more here.

PayPal payments are also processed through Braintree.

Where are you based?

We are in Southsea (part of Portsmouth) on the South coast of England. We are in the centre of town, near the University and Law Courts. Find out more here.

Can I have a cup of tea when I visit?

Yes. At the front of our factory we have the Portsmouth Tea Rooms, where you can enjoy a lovely cup of tea and a slice of cake, or possibly even a proper Cream Tea.

Do you supply businesses?

Yes. In fact, tea wholesale and contract packing is what we mainly do and what we've always done. We keep large quantities of tea in stock and fulfil orders ranging from a few thousand tea bags up to millions of teabags per month. If you need loose tea or teabags for your business, please give us a call on 023 9275 0122 or email

Do you supply private individuals?

Yes, via this website and our factory shop. We have also decided to start building up a list of stockists further afield, so if you know of a good shop in your town that ought ot be stocking quality tea, please put them in touch with us and we will be delighted to talk to them.
