Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl, had this tea blended for him by a Chinese mandarin to suit the limey water at his Northumbrian seat, Howick Hall.

Its distinctive sweet citrus flavour comes from natural oil of Bergamot, a fruit similar to a grapefruit. The base teas, from India, China and Africa, give a delicate flavour but enough strength to support the Bergamot.

The blue cornflower petals are arrestingly beautiful and give the blend a very distinctive appearance.

Yes, they are Bergamot Oranges from Italy (and yes, they are often green).

Bergamot Oil is the original and best flavour used to make Earl Grey Tea.

We are one of a handful of small, specialist Tea Merchants who still use natural Bergamot.

The oil is extracted from the rind, like when you zest a lemon.

It takes 20 of these knobbly green, orange or yellow "Sour Oranges" to flavour just 1Kg of our remarkable Earl Grey Tea.

Nowadays, nearly all tea companies use artificial flavourings to flavour their Earl Grey Tea, because it's easier and cheaper to use and has a longer shelf life.

To be quite frank, natural oils are a bit of a nightmare to buy, store and use. And they are cripplingly expensive.

So why do I insist on only using only 100% pure, natural Bergamot oil?

Because that's what gives our Earl Grey Tea its remarkable flavour. So far as I'm concerned, it makes the effort worthwhile many times over.

I personally love the taste of "old-fashioned" naturally-flavoured Earl Grey. That deep, rich, pungent, peppery aroma seems to give you a "lift" as soon as you taste it - and it's true that Bergamot has long been used as a traditional antidepressant.
